Shalom Yisrael Meir -
In response to your inquiry concerning my opinion, as a counter-missionary educator, regarding the recent revision to the Catholic prayer concerning the conversion of Jews...
Frankly, I don't see much of a problem there for at least the following reasons:
- Following the Vatican II Council in the mid-1960s, it was publicly announced by the Catholic authorities (I recall seeing a full-page ad in the NY Times) that the Jews have their own covenant with G-d and, thus, it would be morally and ethically wrong to go out and convert them the Christianity.
- Given the above, I see no reason why the Catholics don't have a right to pray as they wish, as long as they don't start to overtly or covertly engage in Jewish evangelism. After all, in our Shakharit we say, "Baruch Atah HaShem Elokeinu Melech ha'olam, she'lo asani goy."
I think that our focus should be on providing a strong Jewish education to our people and not worry too much about what Christian prayers contain. A good Jewish education is the best weapon against Jewish evangelism.
